TECHNIQUE: REVERSE PULP PAINTING

Arnold Grummer’s Paper on the River Masterclass is offered to attending artists and area art educators. There are 16 places open for this class.
The Masterclass will take place in the Atlas Science Center’s Paper Lab on the River Level.
Supply list for attendees to bring:
- Apron
- 2-3 16oz empty plastic containers
- Turkey baster
Workshop cost for attending artists: $25 each ($15 for Undergraduate Art Students)
Workshop cost covers supplies including fibers, pigments, couch materials, etc.
The Masterclass Workshop Value of $150 per attendee is underwritten by Mabel Grummer, Arnold Grummer’s LLC, and the Appleton Area School District (AASD).

Class Description
Paper is typically made in a sheet by pulling pulp up from a vat of water and pulp with a mold and deckle. In contrast “Cloud paper” or reverse pulp painting, is a technique where layers of pulp are applied by hand to a backing sheet, either pressed or simply allowed to dry on the sheet, and then carefully peeled away. With this technique, it is possible to make extremely thin sheets of paper, with a variety of interesting layered effects. It is also not necessary to have special equipment like a press or dry box, so this way of making paper is accessible to people who don’t have access to those items. During this class we will also use natural earth pigments to color various kinds of pulp, and experiment with incorporating inclusions (objects which can be embedded in the paper) like thread, ribbon, and other lightweight two-dimensional object
About Hannah O’Hare Bennett
Hannah O’Hare Bennett is an artist, papermaker and educator based in Madison WI. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Kansas (1998) and an MFA in Design Studies from the University of Wisconsin Madison (2017). Between those degrees, she worked as a farmer, Peace Corps Volunteer (Ecuador, 2004-2006), and produce manager, manual labor that informs her current subject matter and manner of creating art. She has had many residencies in the last three years, including at Women’s Studio Workshop (NY), StudioWorks at the Tides Institute (ME), and The Textile Arts Center in Manhattan, and has taught workshops at the Morgan Conservatory and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, as well as in her own studio, Philyra Studio, LLC in Madison. Her work has been shown across the country in group and solo shows, and has been featured in the Surface Design Association Journal. In 2019, her work was selected for inclusion in Handpapermaking Magazine’s Portfolio 13, In Between. She has served on the board of North American Hand Papermakers and edited the organization publication, Bull & Branch. She has taught college courses at Mount Mary University and University of Montana Western, and works as a substitute teacher for the Madison Metropolitan School District.
